Black Tansy Farm is a small family-run farm in Springfield, OR. We use a year-round pasture system to raise heritage-breed cattle, pigs, and sheep. We are Animal Welfare Approved for our pork products and are working towards certification for our cattle and sheep herds, as well.
Visit our website (blacktansyfarm.com/csa) to join our Meat CSA program. Please contact us directly via phone or email if you have any questions.
We use a rotational grazing system, avoid using antibiotics (except when animals are sick), and seek to steward the land with a high standard of ecological responsibility.
All animals spend 100% of time on pasture, unless they need temporary in-barn care for illness, lambing/calving, or other condition. We practice multi-species rotational grazing to help break parasite cycles and keep the pastures healthy. All meat animals are finished on grass here at our farm. During the winter we feed ruminants a mixture of alfalfa, grass, and mixed grain hay, supplemented with minerals. We are currently working to restore our pastures and we primarily rely on the animals themselves to help restore the pasture. We irrigate 4 of our paddocks and manage the remainder as dryland pasture. We do not use any chemical insect/pest management practices.
We plant native grass seed in non-pasture grassy areas. We are establishing hedgerows along fences to provide cover and habitat for wildlife. We have installed bat boxes and bird nests to encourage insect-eating wildlife. We also protect trees and shrub copses in the pasture to provide bird and wildlife habitat.
